Political correctness (P.C) and Christianity.

Reading Time: 4 minutes

I have been putting off writing about this topic for almost weeks now. Every time the Holy Spirit troubles my heart for this topic, i let it slide. Because its a sensitive topic to write about in this century, this amazing developed generation, but i had to remind myself that i said this blog was a vessel that God is using so i will write anything He puts in my heart to do so.

I first came across this word ( political correctness) when i was listening to a song, and a singer said

” so you want to be politically correct i suppose”.

That was when i first heard that word and i went to dig a little bit about it. From the original definition and history the word was supposed to mean “  language, policies, or measures that are intended to avoid offense or disadvantage to members of particular groups in society. Since the late 1980’s, the term has come to refer to avoiding language or behavior that can be seen as excluding, marginalizing, or insulting groups of people considered disadvantaged or discriminated against, especially groups defined by sex or race. “- Wikipedia

The original definition of P.C is amazing, and but in the recent years it has created a gray area in our judgments, it has mixed truth and lies in the same bowl and it has made telling the truth offending, and hence in one way or the other Christianity is loosing its fiercely stands that are in the Bible due to political correctness.
Jesus was politically incorrect, from the Bible the way He was living His life could have been deemed politically incorrect. Are we His followers the same?

When i was still using social media, it was a little bit complicated when different topic were discussed in the platform, i was always left wondering should i say what the Bible say or should i say what would be considered politically correct so that i wont be in trouble with people by what i have said?

Isn’t this what most of us are afraid to do? not to say something that will offend people?

If you take the concept of political correctness at face value, it is a good thing. If being politically correct means that we treat people of different backgrounds with respect and do not stereotype them based on their race or gender, then it is in fact, very biblical. But this is not the real intention of our modern, politically correct movement.-Crosswalk.com

In its original terms political correctness would have been a protection tool, but not. Political correctness is used as a weapon to stop those who would say what is right, just so to please people. May be as Christians we are also in this dilemma, where by we are also forced to not call sins by their names, bend some words in the Bible to fit the mold or even to avoid condemning sins directly all because we want to be politically correct, all because we want to avoid to offend people, all because we want to please people and not God anymore.

Let us remember that;
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever”
– Isaiah 40:8
Let me show you the example of how political correctness has gone far to a point where we Christians should start to ask ourselves what does the Bible say, and are living (saying and doing things) to please God or to please people.

  • Eliminate references to God as Father in the Bible because this is considered sexist.
  • Some companies forbid employees from reading the Bible at work because this is considered religious harassment of those who do not believe.
  • Promotion of LGBTQ and abortion rights.
  • All of this political correctness movement which has diverted from its original purposes, is making us left with a side to pick aside from God, and we are here asking ourselves what does the Bible say about this.

If everybody is doing something, does it mean we as Christians have to do them too? Is it Biblical just cause everybody is doing it?

What does the Bible say about it? What does God say about it? Do we live for Him or for the society’s normal things?

May we not be like the people in Lot’s days who forgot completely about God and did what was normal in those days without considering what God wants from their lives.
The answer to all the evils and problems in the society is not political correctness, it is not to avoid to offend people, it is to proclaim the truth that is found in the Bible, the Word of God and only His Words. As Christians, however, we understand that the way to deal with evil is to confront it with the truth of the scriptures and remain steadfast that this truth, whether it seems politically correct or not, remains the truth for each generation. Generational ideas and movements change, but the truth of God’s word remains the same.
May we be fearless in the way we proclaim the truth,  may we speak the Word of God openly, may we stand and represent His kingdom on earth openly without worrying what people would think or be offended but more worry about what our Father in Heaven thinks and sees from us.

2 Timothy 4:2-4 -” Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths”.

    Every Blessing,
